In perfume, we often talk about a tobacco note as a singular experience, meant to convey something typically close to a dense, cigar–rich, robust, unmistakable blast. But just like there are myriad variations in jasmine (Sambac? Grandiflorum? Auriculatum?) and rose (damascena? Alba? Centifolia? Ta’if?)
Tobacco is, aromatically speaking, a very broad category. The great majority of perfumes that boast a tobacco note, in general, are using various synthetic materials to build an accord. Tobacco is expensive to process and problematic unless treated in a specific way to remove nicotine. If a natural tobacco absolute is used, it is almost always from the gentle Virginia tobacco.
With all respect to the beautiful broadleaf virginia tobacco, Bossa Nova was developed with a compliment of a much less common tobacco extrait, extracted from the rare Perique tobacco, grown in a single parish in the fields of Louisiana. It is fruity and spiced and precious.
Other naturals include a beautiful organic sandalwood oil we have begun sourcing from a sustainability-focused collective in Australia, black keemun tea absolute, which is also a beautiful departure from expected tea notes and brings forward a lightly tropical and plummy warmth. Finally, the cigar box carrying all this warmth is made from an oakwood absolute, extracted from aged oak whiskey barrel staves (yay, upcycling!!)

The perfect soft, comforting, woody scent. Creamy sandalwood and blonde tobacco with a hint sweetness. This and Prairie are going to be my Fall staples!
This is the most beautiful Sandalwood scent I have EVER smelled. I received it as a sample, and fell IMMEDIATELY in LOVE! I bought two full sized bottles before it ever hit the market. GET THIS!
Admittedly I was a little nervous when I got a free sample of this with my most recent order, because my track record with fragrances including tobacco, leather, and anything remotely alcoholic hasn't been great. But I figure there's no harm in trying a scent at least once. I'm incredibly pleasantly surprised! I was worried the aged whiskey oakwood, tobacco, and leather would end up making this far too boozy and/or animallic for me (I'm more of a Celeste, Mirasol, and Cloudbreath kinda lady). Bossa Nova is warm, deep, and indulgent, yes, but not as hedonistic as a happy hour bar complete with a cigar lounge. There's a coziness to this, and it's a pretty smooth blend. I'm still going to take my time testing out my sample, but I am glad this one didn't scare me off as I had worried it would. I am now curious about trying Haute Damn, too, which I also thought would be too much for me. MdA has truly been a fun and unique scent sampling experience!
I was a little nervous about trying this when it arrived as a free sample, because leather and tobacco notes seem to be very fickle on my skin, but this is very smooth and almost caramel-like. Could certainly see this being a cozy autumn and winter fragrance for those who love indulgent fragrances. Will have to keep testing this out!
Received a sample with my order of Haute Damn. Smells wonderful. Notes are as described however the first time I tried it on I could have sworn I smelled light mint which was totally fine. Sweet but not cloying, warm with no sharpness. Would definitely consider ordering
